Hemingwayapp is a nifty little web tool for students who want to improve their Writing skills. All a user has to do is copy/paste in some text and click edit and they will get a Readability score. British Pathé was one of the leading producers of newsreels and documentaries during the 20th Century. This week, the company, now an archive, is turning over its entire collection — over 85,000 historical films – to YouTube. The archive — which spans from 1896 to 1976 – is a goldmine of footage, containing movies of some of the most important moments of the last 100 years. It’s an amazing collection that will be gold mine to U.S. and World History teachers everywhere. And, in a bonus to teachers of English Language Learners, many appear to be close-captioned (not using YouTube’s error-plagued automatic system). I’m adding this info to both The Best Websites For Teaching & Learning About World History and to The Best Websites For Teaching & Learning About U.S. History.
Technology has changed every facet of education, how will you shape the classroom of tomorrow? The core research source for the website's study guides was originally available by a paid annual subscription fee, but is now offered by donation, as a part of the website.
Energy for Life is a wonderful new iPad app by the creators of Miracle of Life and Experience Life. This beautifully designed interactive app takes students through the different systems of the body: digestive, respiratory, and circulatory. What I like about these series of apps from iDiCreative are the easy to understand explanations and interactive animations that engage students and allow them to learn in a fun way (Energy for Life does this by interacting w/ dinosaurs). This is a fantastic app for MS/HS students as well as Health/Biology/Science teachers. [Written by dkapuler on May 17, 2013]. Critical Past is a great free site for history buffs or teachers. This site has over 57,000 videos and 7 millions stock-free images from the last 100+ years. What makes this site so great is the ability to search for data by decade, subject, or even find out what happened on your birthday.
There are quite a few sites out there that show historical photos or videos, along with their location on a map - you're able to see what a particular street looked like fifty or one hundred years ago. HistoGrafica Sepia Town here and Then has a limited number of historical videos. Old S.F. shows photos from San Francisco. Time Shutter does the same for San Francisco. What Are The Best (& Worst) Scenes From "Mind Your Language"? 70's British situation comedy show called "Mind Your Language," which is about an ESL teacher and his class. CVS Pharmacy has a pretty impressive multimedia collection of health resources. There are three sections on the site - animations, multimedia, and audio. The animations are engaging, but the English probably isn't very accessible to English Language Learners. The multimedia slideshows are also good, and are probably accessible to Intermediate ELL's. Their audio reports are the best resources on the site for ELL's - they're short reports with audio support for the text. See more under Health.
Voices Across Time was created to help teachers harness the power of song as primary source to supplement any secondary American Social Studies, Language Arts, and Music curriculum. The project has three components (use the buttons at the top of this page to find out more about each): a Teacherfs Guide, the Summer Institute for Teachers, and Lesson Plans and other Teaching Resources. Also found at this site is an index of Timely Tunes; songs appropriate to enhance discussion of any major holiday or historical anniversary. Songs have a special power to express what words alone cannot: hopes, fears, dreams, love, hate, anger, pride, aspirations, and disappointments. Because songs span the breadth of human experience, they are uniquely able to communicate across time and space the beliefs and ideas held by their composers, performers and listeners. Yet textbooks are silent.
