Kindoma Storytime is an interesting iOS app that combines "story time" w/ video chat to allow others to read a digital book together. This is really good when wanting to read a story w/ another who is not around (i.e. child, student, etc). The books can be selected by Reading and then are synced together so when a page is turned it does it on both devices. Another great feature is the ability to point or highlight words so that the other person can see what is going on in real time. Knowble Articles is a free site for people learning a number of languages, including English. First, you take a relatively quick forty question test to let them evaluate your present level in the language you want to learn. Next, you're provided a variety of articles to read that are aligned with the test results. Words that they figure are new to you are shown in bold, and you can get an audio recording of it as well as a translation of the word into your native language. In addition, on the side of the article there is a short related cloze, or gap-fill exercise.

Kanji Box is a simple Japanese character/vocabulary quiz application which operates within Facebook. It allows you to choose an ability level (Beginner to Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 1) and then test yourself on kana, kanji and vocabulary. Once you have trained up via the drill function you can sit a quiz and then get feedback in the form of stats. Having a score is a great motivation because it gives you a clear target to beat next time you sit the quiz.
