Letter Battle is a super fun iOS app that I just downloaded for kids to work on their Spelling skills. This is a great RPG type game (grades 1st-4th) where a user can select their skill level and type of word (i.e. Science, School, Vacation, etc) to embark on an epic adventure. Basically, it works like any turn based strategy game but uses spelling as the means of attack. If a player spells the word wrong they will miss. The goal is to defeat enemies, collect power ups, and advance levels as they complete their quest. Best of all educator/parents can create custom word lists to integrate into the game. Recently, I came across a interactive Lord of the Rings Map of Middle Earth. I know lots of schools and students are reading this so I thought I'd do a brief post on this. This is a great place to find facts about the interesting locations in Middle Earth as well as being able to zoom in/out, click on items, and find out other interesting facts (i.e. age, population, life expectancy, etc.) Also, there's an excellent timeline feature that people can use to find out info on all 5 books (Hobbit/Simarillion included). by Dave Kapuler.

Audio only at: http://www.songlyrics.com/patti-sandi/love-in-any-language-lyrics/ Here are new additions to The Best "Language Maps": From The U.S. Census: The U.S. Census Bureau today released an interactive, online map pinpointing the wide array of languages spoken in homes across the nation, along with a detailed report on rates of English proficiency and the growing number of speakers of other languages. The 2011 Language Mapper shows where people speaking specific languages other than English live, with dots representing how many people speak each of 15 different languages. For each language, the mapper shows the concentration of those who report that they speak English less than "very well," a measure of English proficiency. The tool uses data collected through the American Community Survey from 2007 to 2011. Mapping where English is not the language at home is a somewhat similar map from The Washington Post.

Administratively, institutions find commercial LMSs attractive because vendors promise longevity, stability, reliability, technical support, comprehensive packages for communications, student-and-faculty-friendly design, and compatibility with central data systems for automated integration with records, accounts, and registration. However, administrative drawbacks include costs and a complex selection process for choosing an affordable LMS. For example, eArmyU cited 15 categories with nearly 50 desirable functions as the minimum LMS features. A useful service at http://www.edutools.info/course/ productinfo/index.jsp compares 35 LMSs in 10 categories and 33 features. Organizations like ADL, IMS, CARAT and OKI are developing standards and providing resources to help guarantee the best, evolving and changing systems, to keep costs reasonable, and to enable faculty to access, refine and control content and design. Meanwhile, as more institutions share resources, enabling faculty to create material on the web for all courses, online, face-to-face, and blended, is a wise investment. We also need to ask: How do LMSs affect students? ... Does stepping through different content provide the critical thinking, personalization and competencies that help learning thrive?
